Alistair Carmichael Award Presentation

Today we got an exciting visitor called Alistair Carmichael, who is our local MP. He came in to present us with our Full International School award, which we got by linking with schools around the globe. It was a real privilege to have him come to our school.
Glaitness School works with partner schools in Trinidad, Norway, Australia, Iceland, Canada, India and Bangladesh.

At Glaitness School we think the following…..

Respect and respected means….
Being careful/kind/nice/helpful to others
Sharing
Taking care of equipment/toys/games
Listening to people
Using manners
Trusting each other
Not making too much noise around school
Not bullying

Respect and respected looks like……

Playground
Playing nicely
Helping people if they hurt themselves/zip coats/tie shoelaces etc.
Include everybody
Being quiet/sensible in the playground lines
Don’t call people names

Classroom
Sitting nicely
Listening to the teacher
Sharing
Working together/teamwork
Working hard
Not talking when others are speaking

Dining Room
Being quiet in the dinner hall
Being nice to each other
Being polite/using manners
Listening to staff

Corridors
Walking in single file
Walking/not running
Being quiet/put hand up when teacher tells you
Give way to others in corridor
Not being mean/rude to people/visitors
Not being silly/fighting etc.

What is a pupil council?

The pupil council:
gives pupils the chance to tell teachers and staff their ideas
represents each class in the school
meets regularly to talk about important school issues and projects
puts forward the class views at council meetings
takes forward the views of the very young classes, who may find it difficult to put forward other's opinions.

The pupil council must have:
a constitution, which is a list of rules clearly setting out roles and responsibilities
a chairperson, who leads the meetings by following the agenda, which is a list of items to be discussed
a secretary, who takes notes of what is said at the meeting – these notes are called the minutes of the meeting
a link teacher, to give guidance and support.
